5 Tips for New Law Students

Trevor Jones

Law is a theoretical subject that comprises dozens of theories that requires the individual to have good memorization skills and to be able to recall during relevant situations quickly. The biggest challenge for any law student is to learn all the content.

For newly admitted law students, it is more difficult. So here are some tips on how to survive law school.

1. Work Smart, instead of Hard

The common mistake that new law students do is to think that if they work hard, they will ace in exams. But the reality is that you have to think smart in learning and absorbing knowledge. See where your effort is needed and put your 100 percent on it.

You can create shortcuts, keywords, or small words that you can keep in mind, and be able to use when needed.

2. Don’t Cram

You are not in high school anymore, cramming is never an option in college. You have to keep up with courses by regularly reading and doing assigned work on time. Furthermore, by doing regular work, you won’t have stress.

Prepare notes and re-read them every day so that when exam time is near, you just have to go through them at once.

3. Study in groups

Unlike other professions, studying in a group in law school is usually very beneficial. Groups help students to share their ideas and notes with others, and sometimes their notes help in learning. Study groups also help you in finding good friends that are your type.

But remember that study groups should not be more than 4 to 5 people.

4. Make a study plan

If you have to start early with good grades, then make a study plan. The study plan should be made in a way that it aligns with your learning style. There are many study plans online, but make sure that you don’t just follow one, instead take out what suits you and include them in your study plan.

5. Review Yourself

After taking exams or small quizzes make sure to evaluate yourself. Instead of dwelling on failure, it is better to improve. If you have any confusion, refer to your professors, or ask your friends to help you out.

This can help in making sure that you are confident in the future and know where you need to improve yourself.
